Walter Arlen er nå nesten 100 år gamal – og heile århundret kjem at til liv i historiene og musikken hans. Han fortel om alt frå lyset og den siste trikken, til sin ungdom i Wien og dei gyldne solnedgangane i Los Angeles. Filmen maler eit kjærleg og fleirsidig bilde av ein jødisk musiker og familien hans, som ble forvist fra sitt land i 1938. Utfordringene ble fleir da hans psykisk syke mor tok livet sitt liv. Det at han lever i et parforhold med en annen mann, har ikkje gjort livet noko enklare for komponisten.

Classical music is not written by those who left life unchallenged.
Walter Arlen is almost 100 years old- and the whole century is included in his stories and music. He tells stories about everything, from the light and the last tram, to his youth and the sunsets in Los Angeles. The movie paints a loving and diverse picture of a jewish musician and his family, who was deported from their country in 1938. The situation became more challenging when his mentally ill mother took her own life. The fact that Walter is living with a male partner has not made life any easier for the composer.
